to attempt to put forward a scheme which he might easily

turn down; and I wrote to him privately again, therefore,

saying that I hoped he would adopt my personal view and

authorize Osborne to tell Lloyd what his requirements

were, and allow them to discuss informally a scheme for

dealing with them. I had a wire from Lampson, saying

that Maze had agreed to this, and I am grateful to

Lampson for his assistance. I saw Osborne and Lloyd
